About PlateTracker & The Harvard Plate Method

How and why we built an anti-stress nutrition companion without calorie counting or kitchen scales.

Our Mission: Nutrition Without Guilt

Over 75% of people who start tracking meals in MyFitnessPal, FatSecret, or Yazio quit within the first 3-4 weeks. The reason is simple: the friction of kitchen scales ("Chore factor") and psychological burnout.

When every meal requires weighing grams, and evenings end with guilt over "red deficit alerts," our relationship with food suffers. We believe taking care of your health should never feel like a chore or trigger anxiety.

"Healthy eating is not a contest in counting abstract calories to two decimal places. It is a sustainable habit of recognizing harmony and variety on your plate."

What is the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate?

In 2011, leading nutrition experts at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health created an evidence-based dietary blueprint: The Healthy Eating Plate.

Instead of complicated calorie math, they proposed an intuitive visual guide based on a standard 9-inch (22-24 cm) dinner plate:

  • 1/2 of your plate - Vegetables, greens & fruits: Rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Fiber physically expands stomach volume, curbs glucose spikes, and nourishes the gut microbiome. (Note: Potatoes don’t count as vegetables here due to their high glycemic impact).
  • 1/4 of your plate - Healthy, high-quality protein: Fish (salmon, tuna), poultry, eggs, tofu, lentils, beans, or Greek yogurt. Protein provides lasting satiety and preserves lean muscle mass.
  • 1/4 of your plate - Whole intact grains: Quinoa, oats, buckwheat, brown rice, whole-wheat bread. Complex carbohydrates provide sustained, even energy without midday crashes.
  • Healthy plant oils & hydration: Olive or avocado oil in moderation, accompanied by clean water, tea, or coffee without added sugar.

How PlateTracker's Technology Works

Our web application at tracker.platetracker.app blends state-of-the-art multimodal AI with verified nutrition science:

  1. Instant Client Compression: Photos are compressed directly inside your phone browser using HTML5 Canvas & WebAssembly, dropping file size to ~150 KB for privacy and instant uploads.
  2. Multimodal Computer Vision: Advanced vision models (Gemini Vision) segment the meal and accurately evaluate the relative proportions of plate sectors.
  3. Deterministic Database Backstop: We never let AI "hallucinate" calorie numbers. Nutritional calculation relies strictly on verified USDA FoodData Central databases.
  4. Anti-Guilt Positive Reinforcement: No red warning signs or shaming. If a plate lacks fiber, PlateTracker gently suggests adding a handful of greens next time.
